What do our subtitling services include?
Our subtitling services translate existing subtitle files into more than 60 languages. You send us the file that goes with your video, in SRT or WebVTT format, and you get one file back per language, with the same numbering and the same timecodes. The translated file loads in your player in place of the original.
Subtitles and closed captions are two different files. Subtitles translate what is said, for viewers who do not understand the language of the video. Closed captions stay in the language of the video and are written for viewers who cannot hear it, so they also note sounds and who is speaking. Captions are produced by closed captioning services or by your own video team. If you already have a caption file, we translate it the same way as a subtitle file. We do not offer voice-over.
SRT and WebVTT hold the same thing, a list of lines with the time each one appears and disappears. WebVTT is the format read by web players, and SRT is accepted by most video platforms and editing tools. We work on either. Translation changes the length: many languages need more characters than English to say the same thing, while the time on screen stays the same. The linguist therefore condenses the line so that it can still be read in the time available. If your platform or your style guide sets a maximum number of characters per line, send it with the file.
One project manager follows your project from the quote to the delivery and keeps the list of names and terms used in your videos. Every file is handled under NDA, including videos that have not been published yet.
What goes wrong in translated subtitles
Lines too long for the time on screen
The translation is faithful, but it is longer than the original and the subtitle is gone before the viewer reaches the end of it.
Timecodes changed by accident
A file edited by hand or passed through a text tool can lose a number or a timestamp, and from that point the subtitles no longer appear with the speech.
Spoken language translated literally
People interrupt themselves, joke and leave sentences unfinished. A word-for-word translation of that reads like a written document.

Who translates your subtitles
Your subtitles are translated by a native speaker of the target language who has at least five years of professional experience and passed a practical test before joining our network. You choose between two levels of service when you order. With the first, the subtitles are pre-translated by AI, then reviewed and localized by a native expert, which suits recordings people watch for information, such as a webinar or an internal presentation. With the second, a native linguist translates everything, and that is the better choice for a brand film or for dialogue that relies on humor.
SRT and WebVTT files returned intact
In SRT translation, as with WebVTT subtitles, the linguist changes the text and nothing else. The numbering and the timecodes stay as they were, so the file works in your player or video platform without adjustment. We also translate video scripts and transcripts sent as Word or text documents.
Lines short enough to read
The linguist works within the limits you give us and shortens a line when the target language runs long. It helps to send the video, or a link to it, along with the file. A subtitle file does not show who is speaking to whom, and in many languages the choice between formal and informal address depends on it.
The same terms from the first video to the last
When a training course or a series arrives in several parts, your project manager keeps the terminology list of the project and checks each delivery against it. We keep the same linguist whenever possible when you send the next videos. The name of a product or of a course module then stays the same from one video to the next.
